International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer has been annually observed on September 16. It is vital to save the ozone layer, which is protecting all the living beings on the planet. International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated to spread awareness about the depletion of the life-saving Ozone layer. The day also aims to search for solutions to preserve it from further destruction.
“Climate change and ozone depletion are two global issues that are different but have many connections. In the ozone depletion case, we managed to work with decision makers effectively so that an international agreement called the Montreal Protocol was achieved that essentially solved the ozone depletion problem.” – Mario J. Molina
History Behind the Day
The first International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was celebrated in the year 1995. The celebration of the day was established by the United Nations General Assembly. September 16th was designated as the Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on December 19, 1994. It was on this date in 1987, on which the United Nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Depletes the Ozone Layer. The day was first observed on September 16, 1995. The commemoration of the day promotes the importance of the ozone layer. It is a fragile shield of gas, and it protects the Earth from the harmful rays of the sun. Due to the ozone-depleting substances, there are holes in the protective shield. With the observance of this day, one must understand the significant role of the ozone layer to future generations. September 16, 2017, marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol.
