The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed on November 25 each year. This day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the widespread violence women face, including domestic violence, rape, and other forms of abuse. November 25 marks the beginning of 16 days of activism aimed at increasing awareness, encouraging prevention, and promoting education, which concludes on December 10, Human Rights Day.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is a global observance, not a public holiday. On this day, various campaigns and events are held worldwide to raise awareness and educate people on the importance of eliminating violence against women.
“Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities, and economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price” – Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General.

History of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This date was chosen to honor the assassination of the three Mirabal sisters: María Argentina Minerva Mirabal, Antonia María Teresa Mirabal, and Patria Mercedes Mirabal, who were activists in the Dominican Republic. They stood against the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The sisters were killed on November 25, 1960, on the orders of the Dominican ruler, Rafael Trujillo.
Each year, observances for this day focus on a specific theme, such as “Demanding Implementation, Challenging Obstacles.” On this day, women’s groups organize rallies and various events to raise awareness about the prevention of violence against women. One of the key campaigns is the ‘Say No to Violence Against Women‘ initiative, where people are encouraged to add their names to help end human rights violations against women.
