International Anti-Corruption Day is celebrated on December 9 every year. Corruption is one of the most significant social crimes affecting developed and developing countries. It undermines nations’ political, social, and economic development, with the poorest people often bearing the brunt of its impact. Currently, some of the most corrupt countries in the world include North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, and Haiti. This day aims to raise awareness about the issue of corruption and to unite people in the fight against it.
“Fighting Corruption is not just good governance. It’s self-defence and patriotism.” – Joe Biden

History of International Anti-Corruption Day
International Anti-Corruption Day was first established on December 9, 2003, by the United Nations General Assembly to combat corruption and raise public awareness about its impacts. The official reason for creating International Anti-Corruption Day was rooted in concerns about the threats corruption poses to the stability and security of societies, the integrity of democracy, ethical values, justice, and the rule of law. Since its inception, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have reported a growing intolerance toward corruption. This is evidenced by the increasing number of politicians and executives being prosecuted and convicted for corruption-related crimes.
