Housing Day is an annual observance celebrated on November 18th each year. Homelessness remains a significant issue, even in developed countries. A house is a place where a person can rest, live as a family, prepare meals, and enjoy a safe environment. Having a home is essential for any living being, as it provides shelter and security.
In many countries, homelessness is often treated as a criminal issue. Housing Day is celebrated to raise awareness and advocate for societal change, encouraging people to view homelessness with empathy rather than criminalizing those affected. The observance aims to foster understanding and work towards solutions that address the challenges faced by homeless individuals.
“There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts, and we cannot prevent all conflict, but when we know where the hungry, the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help.” – Jan Schakowsky

History of Housing Day
Housing Day has been celebrated since 1998. Homelessness was declared a national disaster through a declaration by the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, supported by then-Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman and the mayors of Canada’s largest cities. The declaration emphasized that every Canadian, like every person in the world, has a right to a safe home.
The mayors, invoking their authority to declare a state of emergency, called on federal and provincial governments to take immediate action to support homeless individuals. This led to the implementation of both emergency measures and long-term strategies aimed at creating more affordable housing for those affected.
The mission of the Housing Federation is to support and promote the work of housing associations and advocate for better housing and neighborhoods.
