Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most famous festivals celebrated annually in India. It is a Hindu festival of lights observed every year in countries such as India, Guyana, Fiji, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mauritius, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and recently in Sindh Province, Pakistan. Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana.
The celebration of Diwali can last up to five days, during which people decorate their homes and workplaces with small clay oil lamps and electric lights. Many also put special efforts into cleaning their homes and yards before Diwali. On the festival day, people wear new clothes, greet each other with “Happy Diwali,” and exchange sweets with friends, family members, and neighbors. In the evening, they celebrate with fireworks.
Throughout India, streets and temples are decorated with spectacular light displays and colorful garlands, adding to the festive atmosphere of this cherished holiday.
History of Diwali or Deepavali
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated in the month of Karthika. The term “Deepavali” means “rows of diyas” or clay lamps. The festival marks Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after completing his 14-year exile. In West Bengal, Diwali is also celebrated as “Kali Puja” in honor of Goddess Kali. In southern India, the festival commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the Asura Naraka, a king of Assam who imprisoned many people; it is believed that Krishna freed the prisoners. For many Buddhists in India, Diwali also marks the anniversary of Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism. Deepavali, or Diwali, is a festival of lights, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness and the dispelling of spiritual darkness.
