National Hairball Awareness Day is observed annually on the last Friday in April. This year it falls on April 28. A hairball is a small collection of hair or fur formed in the stomach of animals, that is occasionally vomited up when it gets too big. Hairballs in a few animals, if not treated immediately, may cause the animal to stop feeding and ultimately die due to dehydration. Hairballs can be symptoms of more serious health issues. It is a day to create awareness about this little-known problem of your cat.

History of National Hairball Awareness Day
It was launched in 2006 by the National Museum of Health and Medicine to spotlight the collection of 24 veterinary and three human hairballs which is also known as trichobezoars. National Hairball Awareness Day is listed as one of the Pet Health Awareness Events of the American Veterinary Medical Association. It is important for every cat lover to be aware of the dangers of hairballs.

How to Celebrate the Day
It is a day to learn about things that you can do to prevent your cat from developing hairballs and evaluate the health of your cats. It is a reminder to all friends of felines to practice regular grooming with a pet brush to reduce the number of hairballs. Owners can give some unique cat foods to reduce hairballs by improving skin and coat health while also adding fiber to their diets. Finally, bored kitties tend to groom themselves too frequently; cat owners should work in some extra playtime. So spend this day grooming your cat which will lessen the hairballs. Post your thoughts on social media about the day by using the hashtag #HairballAwarenessDay.
