Global Dignity Day is an annual celebration observed on the third Wednesday of October. Dignity is an inherent part of the human condition. It is an initiative celebration day that educates and inspires young people. Global Dignity Day is celebrated to make everyone living in this world realize that they have rights and deserve respect in every aspect.
“Real education enhances the dignity of a human being and increases his or her self-respect. If only the real sense of education could be realized by each individual and carried forward in every field of human activity, the world will be so much a better place to live in.” – A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
History of Global Dignity Day
The first Global Dignity Day was observed on October 20, 2008. The third Wednesday of every October marks this celebration Day. Professor Pekka Himanen, John Hope Bryant, and HRH Crown Prince Haakon are the ones who established this Day. Global Dignity is an autonomous, non-political, non-profit, non-criticism organization working towards dignity for all people. They create a global conversation about dignity and support dignity-based leadership to discuss the issue of dignity with the group of young people. On this Day, voluntary facilitators conduct events by visiting schools and telling students about their lives and experiences with dignity. The voluntary facilitators can be of any nationality and any profession.
The celebration Day is all about the attitude of the speaker’s life and is less about the profession. The organization aims to make every student understand the concept of dignity. Defining the term dignity in their own words and sharing their life stories gives the students ownership of the idea. After the speech of the voluntary facilitators, they invited the students to share their own stories in front of the class. Now the students are asked to write a letter to themselves that lists their aspirations and goals. The letters are then collected and stored. It will be returned to the children during the next Global Dignity Day. It lets them measure how their lives have become and what are goals they have been met.
Five Principles of Dignity Project:
- Every human being has a right to lead a dignified life.
- A dignified life means an opportunity to fulfill one’s potential, which is based on having a human level of health care, education, income, and security.
- Dignity means having the freedom to make decisions in one’s life and to be met with respect for this right.
- Dignity should be the basic guiding principle for all actions.
- Ultimately, our own dignity is interdependent with the dignity of others.

How to Celebrate Global Dignity Day
Celebrating Global Dignity Day is very simple. You can actively involve yourself as a volunteer facilitator. Encourage school children to lead a dignity-filled life with your life stories. Ask them to write their goals on paper and collect them. Return them during the next year’s celebration and let them check how much they have achieved towards their goal. On the other hand, you can even tell people and children in your location about the importance of dignity by arranging for a party at your home. Reach them at this celebration moment and make other people talk about their own life. You can share your Dignity Day celebrations on social media using the hashtag #GlobalDignityDay.
