Human beings are social creatures and have valued the importance of friends in their lives. To celebrate this noble feeling, it was deemed fit to have a day dedicated to friendship and friends. Accordingly, the first Sunday in the month of August of every year is declared as an International Friendship Day, and it was declared as a holiday in the US with Proclamation made by US Congress in 1935. This beautiful idea of celebrating International Friendship Day was joyfully accepted by various other countries across the world. Gradually the day gained popularity and today Friendship Day is feasted in a significant number of countries including India.

History of International Friendship Day
International Friendship Day is a day created to encourage friendships and bridge the gaps within the race, color, religion, and other circumstances which keep humans from enjoying friendship with one another. Today is such a global society it is imperative that the leaders of tomorrow, respect include, and understand world diversity. International Friendship Day was declared by the United Nations in 2011 with the intent of building communities and helping move towards world peace. The United Nations helps the Government, Organisations, and groups to host activities and events that promote dialogue, acceptance, and understanding between people of various backgrounds. Internation Friendship Day was initially observed on July 30th but is now celebrated on the first Sunday of August.
