“At the dinner table when I was very little, I would hear people bickering… To escape the bickering, I started modelling the soft bread with my fingers. With the dough of the French bread sometimes it was still warm I would make little figures. And I would line them up on the table and this was really my first sculpture.” -Louise Bourgeois
History of National French Bread Day
There is no record found about the history, origin, and creator of the National French Bread Day. However, the French Bread has a very long history and is been in existence some 200 years earlier. The French bread is also known as a baguette is a long thin loaf made from the basic lean dough. The bread is defined by its length and its crisp crust and is also called the French stick or French loaf. France is known for its kinds of bread and they have been baking the long sticks of bread for over two centuries. In 1920, a law was passed in France that prohibited anyone from starting work before 4 a.m. Thus this made it impossible for the French bakers to get done with their traditional bread baked in time and give it to their customers in the morning before they start off with work.
So the bakers have adjusted their time by shaping their loaves of bread which ended up in baking the bread more quickly and evenly. The long, narrow loaves were found to be more convenient for slicing and storing as an outcome. Thus came the birth of the French bread and sooner it has become a part of everyday life. It was only in the year 1920 what we call a baguette we know and love came into being. It has been an iconic French food from the beginning of the twentieth century although it has been available from the mid-eighteenth century.
