National DNA Day is commemorated on April 25 of every year. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is made up of nucleotide molecules that contain genetic information used for the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all living organisms. All known cellular lives and a few viruses contain DNA. It is a hereditary material in humans and other plants which can replicate, or make copies of itself. An essential role of DNA is to store long-term biological information. National DNA Day day creates an opportunity for students, teachers, and the public to learn and understand DNA, genetics, and genomics.
“Genes are like the story, and DNA is the language that the story is written in.” – Sam Kean
History of National DNA Day
The day was first observed in the USA on April 25, 2003, after the passing of concurrent resolutions by the 108th Congress to announce it as the DNA day. National DNA Day honors the anniversary of James Watson and Francis Crick’s discovery that is Double Helix and the completion of the Genome Project. Double Helix was an article published in 1953, and Human Genome Project was a 13-year-old project which was completed in April 2003. It was NGHRI (National Human Genome Research Institute) that began celebrating the day and continued to organize events and speeches for students and the general public who wish to improve their knowledge of DNA. This day also observes the latest advances in genomic research and the impact of those advances on people’s life. Later, many groups started to celebrate “International DNA Day” and “World DNA Day” on a few specified dates in April.

How to celebrate the day
The day can be observed by attending any of the local events that will take place near you. You can get to know information about such events from the National Human Genome Research Institute website using the Events Map located on the page. Various organizations can also partake in the circumstances. You can even start an event on your own or as a group. It is the best day to share your knowledge and thoughts on DNA with people around you, and it will also give you a chance to learn more. Post pictures and share your thoughts on social media about National DNA Day by using the hashtag #DNADay or #NationalDNADay.
Thank you for reading the post. You can celebrate every day with Happydays365.org and Happy National DNA Day 2024.
