Dewey Decimal System Day is celebrated on December 10th of each year. Haven’t you seen the books in the library have been placed in the same location where you have taken them from? Each of us would see the extensive collection of books in the library organized in a specific order. Library from all over the world has been using the system to keep track of the books. The day celebrates Melvil Dewey on his birthday and honors him for having been found the Dewey Decimal System.
“The Dewey decimal system really works. So that’s all I needed to know. Elementary school taught me that.” – Michelle Rodriguez
History of Dewey Decimal System Day
There is no specific mention about who has founded the day and the year at which the Day was first celebrated. It is a Day that celebrates the birthday of Melvil Dewey, an American Librarian who was born on December 10, 1851. He was also referred to as the inventor of the system of library classification and founder of the American Metric Bureau. It is a proprietary library classification system which is otherwise called Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The system was first published in the year 1876 in order to classify library materials by fields. It is the most widely used library classification system and it has ten main fields that are additionally divided into a smaller, more specialized field.
Libraries from around the world use the system to organize and classify the huge collection of books. Dewey Decimal Classification has made it possible to find any book and to return the same to its exact place on the library shelves. The system has been in use for more than 160 years, and the most recent revisions had taken place in the year 2011. The System is found to be used in 135 countries globally and is translated into 30 different languages. The Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) is currently maintaining and publishing the System. OCLC is a non-profit cooperative that serves libraries.
