History of International Day of the African Child
The International Day of the African Child was created by the Organisation of African Unity in the year 1991 and since then the day is being celebrated each and every year. The day was created to honor the people who participated in the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976. In 1976, around ten thousand black school children marched more than half a mile long in a column at Soweto, South Africa. They marched in a column protesting the poor quality of their education provided in their country.
The children also demanded the right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of students were shot in this protest and more than hundreds were killed in the protest of the following 2 weeks. Thousands of students were injured in the protest. The photographs of the spot were released worldwide and many people started blaming them for killing young students who protested. This day was mainly created to keep this incident in remembrance each and every year. On this day, governments, NGOs, Stakeholders, and other international organizations meet together to discuss the challenges and opportunities with the right of African children in their minds.
