History of National Cotton Candy Day
The year in which the National Cotton Candy Day was first celebrated is unknown. Cotton Candy was thought to be originated during the 19th century in Europe. Dentist William Morrison and confectioner John C. Warton were credited with the invented cotton candy in 1897. They hadn’t debuted it to the public until the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Cotton Candy was an instant success and they had sold for 25 cents. It was half the cost of the admission to the event and people had bought over 68,000 boxes. During those times, cotton candy was an expensive, labor-intensive and endeavor which was not generally available to the average person, unlike today’s machine-made cotton candy.
Cotton candy is also called in other names like candy floss, candyfloss, fairy floss which is a form of spun sugar. It is and was a favorite treat for the young and old at the circus, carnivals, and fairs. It is often sold in sticks and in bags containing several servings. In the 1970s, an automatic cotton the candy machine was invented. It made cotton candy to be packaged in a bag. From then on, it had hit the stores. It is prepared by heating and liquefying the sugar and spinning it out through the minute holes. It gets re-solidified in minutely thin strands of sugar glass. The final cotton candy contains mostly air. To change the natural white color food coloring can be used. There are numerous flavorings available that change its taste.
