International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated on May 20 of every year. The day marks the day when James Lind started his study to determine the cause of scurvy. By separating 12 sailors into different groups and testing the effect of providing treatments to every team, James Lind was able to provide evidence of the link between the fruit and preventing scurvy. James Lind’s clinical trial was a recorded and controlled clinical trial. Every year, International Clinical Trials Day is commemorated around the world to raise awareness about the importance of clinical trials and research in healthcare.
History of International Clinical Trials Day
The International Clinical Trials Day honors the first-ever clinical trials conducted by James Lind in 1747. After spending two months at sea, he included a dietary supplement of an acidic quality in his experiment. He conducted this clinical trial as the ship is affected by the Scurvy. Then he divided the twelve scorbutic sailors into six groups of two members. All the members received the same diet but, in addition, the first group was given a measure of cider daily, the second group received twenty-five drops of the elixir of vitriol, the third group received six spoonfuls of vinegar, the fourth group received a pint of seawater, the fifth group received two oranges and one lemon and the last group received a spicy paste addition to barley water. The treatment for the members of the fifth group was stopped after six-day as they ran out of fruit. At the same time, one member of that group was fit for duty while the other had almost recovered. Apart from that group, only one group member showed some effects of its treatment. It is the first-ever Clinical Trial conducted in the world and the International Clinical Trials Day honors these trials conducted by James Lind.
