Christmas Day is the traditional holiday that comes on December 25th of every year. The day marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, according to Christian belief. It is a famous day when the children will receive gifts from friends, family, Santa Claus, or Father Christmas. Christmas cards will also be sent in before the day. The word Christmas is derived from the old English “Cristes maesse.” The day of December 25th was chosen to offset the Pagan celebrations of Saturnalia and Natalis Invicti.
“Christmas is a spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we joy in others. It forgets self and finding time for other peoples. It is a discarding of meaningless and stressing the real values.”- Thomas S Monson
History of Christmas Day
A 4th-century archbishop refers to celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ in a homily by John Chrysostom. Christmas is a new kind of celebration on Church holy days. The old church’s holy days are Passover, Lent, and Easter. When Christianity spread into Northern and Western Europe, Christmas bought many changes associated with Winter Solstice. Decorating the house with Christmas trees, holly and mistletoe, and a bearded man delivering gifts were the highlights of these celebrations.
The day is a solemn observance of the birth of Jesus Christ in Medieval times. The term “Cristes Maesse” is first used in a book 0n 1038 in Saxon, England. The celebrations of Caroling, giving Gifts, and Nativity scenes on the day become more regular during the Renaissance Period. In that period, Royalty and nobility are a considerable influence. The Renaissance period covers the time 1300-1700, and the period was filled with inspiration, invention, and art. They all shaped Christmas and the practices of Christians.
Around the late 1800s, communication and transportation changed rapidly, and at that time, people were separated by far distance, and their traditions were also diverse. The celebrations in Georgia will not be heard in Newyork. When the Telegraphs and railroads were introduced, they made the passage for people to bring Christmas with nostalgic feelings under one significant day. A German immigrant and printer named Louis Prang were the first man to introduce Christmas cards in 1875 by Trade. The tradition of a personal visit and writing Christmas letters was gradually changed by sending cards.
As the population gets increases year by year, personal gift-giving and charitable have gradually increased. Puritans didn’t celebrate the Day due to the background Pagan. The day has been illegal in Massachusetts for 22 years ranging from 1659 to 1681. Christmas has not become a federal holiday until 100 years after the founding of the United States of America.
