Christmas Card Day is celebrated on December 9th each year. With just a few weeks left until Christmas, make sure you’ve sent a Christmas card to your loved ones. In today’s digital age, sending traditional cards has become less common, as many prefer to send messages and email greetings via phone. However, nothing is more heartfelt than a handmade card filled with genuine wishes. Share your love and joy through Christmas cards and make the celebration even more special. This day is meant to encourage people to embrace the tradition of sending Christmas cards as a meaningful way to express their feelings.
“Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. Christmas is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” – Thomas S. Monson

History of Christmas Card Day
The history, origin, and founder of Christmas Card Day remain unknown. However, the day honors Sir Henry Cole of England, who created the first commercial Christmas card in 1843. He was a civil servant credited with introducing the idea of sending greetings on what are now the familiar Christmas cards. The card was illustrated by John Callcott Horsley and featured a depiction of a family.
Christmas cards convey a range of sentiments related to the holiday season, often expressing wishes like “Wishing you a Merry Christmas,” “Happy New Year,” and “Season’s Greetings.” They may also include Christmas-themed poems, songs, or biblical verses.
The following year, Christmas card designs featuring flowers or symbols representing the promise of spring became popular. The lithograph firm Prang and Mayer began selling their whimsical Christmas cards, often depicting children or cartoon animals, in America in 1874. By 1880, Prang and Mayer were producing an impressive five million cards annually.
Commercially designed Christmas cards typically feature Christmas-themed designs, such as images of Jesus, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, jingle bells, cakes, gifts, snow, and other elements of the holiday narrative. These cards often showcase Christmas traditions, including seasonal figures and objects associated with the festive season.
