Chimborazo Day is celebrated every June 3rd. Chimborazo day is dedicated to honoring mount Chimborazo an inactive volcano that marks the highest point on earth. It is merely a mountain as it stopped erupting in 550 AD. Your question is right, Mount Everest is the highest point, right? Yes, but technically no. The elevation is measured from the sea level. In that case, Mount Everest, which is 29,029 feet, is the highest point on earth. But Mount Chimborazo, which is 20,565 feet high, resides near the equator where the earth is bulgy (Earth is not a perfect sphere!), which makes it relatively higher. So, this peak marks the farthest point when measured from the earth’s core and the closest point to the moon from the earth by 1.5 miles!
“Never measure the height of a mountain until you have reached the top. Then you will see how low it was.” – Dag Hammarskjold
History of Chimborazo Day
Mount Chimborazo is the tallest point on earth and a major attraction for trekkers and adventurers to climb up to the tallest point on earth, like Everest. It has been an important place on earth, in history, and was one of the two points on earth that were used to find the actual shape of the earth. The French Geodesic Mission, a Lapland team, measured and gathered details from this Mount Chimborazo to analyze the shape of the earth. The results from the analysis made on the top of this majestic volcano proved that the earth is not a perfect Sphere. From then earth was known without any question as an oblate spheroid.
Men and Women are trying to climb up to the peak of Mount Chimborazo for 80 years. Each time being haunted by its height, slippery slopes, and altitude sickness, no one could reach its tip. Alexander von Humbolt in 1802 climbed up to a height of 5,875m high making him record as the first European to climb the highest altitude. The record was unbreakable till 1882 when Edward Whymper successfully reached its peak and stood proud to conquer Chimborazo.
