National Caramel Day is observed on April 5 of every year. Caramel is a delicacy made by heating a variety of sugars resulting in a dark-orange colored product. Caramel can be created with butter, sugar(brown or white), milk, cream, and vanilla. It is used widely in flavoring desserts and puddings, as a topping in ice creams and custards. Caramel is used to make many kinds of chocolates, sweets, pastries, pralines, caramel apples, nougats, and much more. Caramel just goes perfectly with cookies, drinks, ice creams, baked goods, and primarily on its own.
“I think love is caramel. Sweet and fragant; always welcome. It is the gentle golden colour of a setting harvest sun; the warmth of a squeezed embrace; the easy melting of two souls into one and a taste that lingers even when everything else has melted away. Once tasted it is never forgotten.”- Jenny Colgan
History of National Caramel Day
The origin of the National Caramel Day is not known so far. However, caramel is believed to be originated during the seventeenth century, by American women who used caramelized sugar and water to prepare candies. She made those candies as a substitute for expensive sweets. In 1850, it was discovered that when the caramel is added to milk and fat, it made a product that was soft and chewy as candy resulting in caramel candy. The candy quickly became famous all around the country which eventually led to the popularity of caramel. The traditional caramel differs a lot from the smooth caramel.
