“There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts, and we cannot prevent all conflict, but when we know where the hungry, the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help.” – Jan Schakowsky
History of Housing Day
Housing Day has been celebrated since the year 1998. Homelessness has been declared to be a national disaster with the Declaration from the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee by the then-Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman and the mayors of Canada’s biggest cities. With the declaration, every Canadian like every other person in the world has a right to have a safe home. The federal and provincial governments were called on by the mayors who invoke their power to declare a state of emergency to take emergency actions and thereby to support the homeless people. It has made them take some longer-term measures and thus creates more affordable homes for the victims. The mission of the Housing Federation is to support and promote the housing associations’ work and campaign for better housing and neighborhoods.

How to Celebrate Housing Day
Celebrating Housing Day is very simple. Feel blessed if you have a house for yourself and enjoy staying there. Make those people who are fortunate enough like you with a house to live in about their goodwill. Now you have to look at your surroundings and help those people who are suffering from homelessness. Provide them with some form of help and make them live a better life. On this Day, it is the sole duty of every citizen to make every other citizen have a place to shelter in. Participate in the events to raise funds for those homeless people. Share your views about homelessness and the celebration pictures on social media using the hashtag #HousingDay.
