Pepero Day is celebrated every year on November 11. It is a holiday similar to Valentine’s Day, where couples and friends exchange Pepero snacks to show their love and appreciation for one another. Pepero is a popular cookie stick from South Korea, dipped in compound chocolate, and has been manufactured by Lotte Confectionery since 1983. On Pepero Day, stores in Seoul are stocked with hundreds of boxes of Pepero. Thus, Pepero Day provides an opportunity to express your feelings by exchanging these treats.

History of Pepero Day
The exact origin and founder of Pepero Day remain unknown, but there is a popular myth surrounding its creation. In 1983, two female middle school students in the Yeongnam region exchanged Pepero sticks in the hopes of becoming tall and thin. Another theory about the origin of Pepero Day suggests that it was created due to the shape of the number “1” in the date, which resembles the shape of Pepero sticks.
In 1997, Lotte Co., Ltd. began using the aforementioned school story to promote Pepero Day. By 2012, Lotte generated 50% of its annual sales from Pepero Day. By 2013, several department stores, including Hyundai Department Store, Shinsegae, and Lotte Department Store, started to benefit from the celebration of Pepero Day, while stores like E-Mart and Homeplus primarily sold Pepero products on the day.
Pepero is similar to the popular Japanese snack called Pocky. However, Pepero Day has also been criticized for causing stress among single people, particularly among single coworkers. There are various flavors of Pepero available, including Chocolate, Strawberry, Almond, White Chocolate Cookie, Tiramisu Cheese, Black Chocolate Cookie, Peanut, Melon, Double “Dip” White Chocolate, Double “Dip” Black Chocolate, Blueberry Yogurt, and more. Homemade Pepero is also a great way to customize the treat, allowing you to decorate and flavor them to your taste.
Overall, Pepero Day is a delightful occasion to enjoy Pepero with friends, family, and even coworkers.
