International Internet Day is celebrated annually on October 29th. The internet plays a vital role in our daily lives, making it hard to imagine even a single day without it. We rely heavily on the internet to search for information, listen to music, watch videos, shop online, communicate, and much more. Recognizing its significance, this day has been set aside to celebrate the internet as one of humanity’s greatest inventions. International Internet Day acknowledges the Internet’s revolutionary impact on our world and its invaluable contribution to modern society.
“The Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.” – Andrew Brown

History of International Internet Day
In 2005, the first International Internet Day was celebrated as an unofficial holiday to commemorate the very first electronic message sent over a network. Also known as World Internet Day, this date was chosen to honor the moment in 1969 when the first electronic message, “LO,” was sent by a UCLA Computer Science professor and his team over a telephone network to Stanford University. Leonard Kleinrock, Charley Kline, and Bill Duvall were instrumental in establishing this pioneering internet connection.
Charley Kline attempted to send the word “login” but only managed to send the letter “LO” before the connection between the terminals crashed. This incident occurred just a few months after Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon. At the time, the internet was known as the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). Twenty years later, in 1989, the World Wide Web was invented.
