Create a Great Funeral Day is observed annually on October 30th. While it may seem like a strange and unusual holiday, its purpose is meaningful: it encourages people to plan their own funeral arrangements. This day serves as a reminder for everyone to consider and prepare for their end-of-life event.
“The funeral business is so manipulative emotionally. I would want to be thrown into the sea or burned – something that’s not a big hassle.” – Bjork

History of Create a Great Funeral Day
Create a Great Funeral Day has been observed since 1999. Stephanie West Allen founded this unique day based on a personal experience. Allen witnessed her husband struggle to plan a meaningful funeral for his mother, who had left no instructions. Observing her husband’s grief, Allen realized that knowing her mother-in-law’s wishes could have made the process easier and less burdensome.
She established this day to encourage family members to gather and openly discuss their preferences for their own funerals. This helps loved ones understand each person’s wishes, reducing the stress and decision-making burden during times of grief. Based on her experiences, Allen authored Creating Your Own Funeral or Memorial Service: A Workbook. She registered October 30th as Create a Great Funeral Day in 1999.
