World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10th of each year. A man must be mentally healthy to live life happily. When he is found to be tense, stressed and anxious, then he is mentally ill. The day is observed as to raising awareness about the mental health issues from around the world. World Mental Health Day also mobilizes the efforts in support of mental health. The observance will also promote open discussions on mental illnesses, its prevention, and treatments.
“People talk about physical fitness, but mental health is equally important. I see people suffering, and their families feel a sense of shame about it, which doesn’t help. One needs support and understanding. I am now working on an initiative to create awareness about anxiety and depression and help people.” – Deepika Padukone
History of World Mental Health Day
The year 1992 marks the first World Mental Health Day (WMHD). World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization, established this worldwide observance. It has members and contacts in more than 150 countries. The annual awareness program aims at bringing attention to the people about mental illness and its major effects. It is a global awareness day to know more in detail about mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. The celebration encourages the victims to seek help and support. The World Health Organization (WHO) supports this event. WHO is the UN’s directing and coordinating authority for health.
The Mental Health Foundation is another proactive organization that is promoting this day. Every year the UN, through WHO, actively plays a significant role in promoting this event. The WMHD provides a chance for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work. They are asked to tell the requirements needed to make mental healthcare, a reality for the people globally. Nearly 12 percent of the earth’s population suffers from mental disorders. i.e., one out of every four people or about 450 million people experiencing mental illness from all over the world. There is a high need for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.
WHO defines mental health as a state of well-being in which people realize their potential, can work productively, can cope with normal life stresses, and can contribute to their community. The first World Health Assembly chose the WHO logo or emblem in 1948. The logo is often associated with the UN’s promotional material for World Mental Health Day. The emblem has the UN symbol surmounted by a staff with a snake winding around it. The team with the snake has long been associated as a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. The UN logo is often linked with marketing and promotional material for this World Mental Health Day events.
