Portuguese is the National language of Portugal and also an official language in 9 other countries, including Brazil. It is the seventh-largest speaking language with over 250 million active speakers all around the world. This language plays an important role in preserving human civilization, history, and culture. History of World Portuguese Language Day
On May 5, 2009, the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), which is an intergovernmental organization, has been in official partnership with UNESCO since 2000. The World Portuguese Language Day was first announced in the year 2019, during the 40th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, where they decided to celebrate the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures on the day when CPLP was established. After that, May 5th of every year is celebrated as the Portuguese Language Day. It was the first time the unofficial UNESCO language was given recognition.
