Every year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar starts with January. January is the first month to have 31 days, and it is named after the Roman god, Janus. According to Roman religion, Janus is the god of beginnings, time, doorways, endings, gates, duality, and passages. As this month is the door to the entire year, it is named after Janus. Numa Pompilius added the month of January to the Roman Calendar to make the calendar equal to the standard lunar year of 355 days. In the old Roman calendar, March was the first month of the year. Initially, January consists of 30 days only when it was added to the 10-month Roman Calendar. But a day was added by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE. January is considered to be the warmest month of the year in the Southern Hemisphere and the coldest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
The first day of January month starts on the same day as October, and the last day ends on the same day as February and October. During leap years, the first day of the January month starts on the same day as April and July, and the last day ends on the same day of July. Dianthus caryophyllus or Galanthus is the birth flower for January and Garnet is the birthstone for January. The Garnet stone symbolizes constancy. Every day in January is attached to some special celebrations, holidays, festivals, and special observations. The important holidays, national days, and international days observed every day of January 2024 are listed above.
