Take Your Dog to Work Day is celebrated annually on the First Friday after Father’s Day. This year it falls on June 21. This is a day to commemorate the great companions that dogs make and to encourage their adoption from places like local shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies.
“I am a marathon worker and marathon mother. I’ll spend three or four days completely swallowed up by work. And if I make it home in time to say good night, I may have one good hour with the girls, maybe a brief family dinner or a family walk with the dog, and then it is back on the computer to prepare for tomorrow’s shows.” – Mika Brzezinski
History of the day
In 1999, PSI (Pet Sitters International) created Take Your Dog to Work Day. They believe that through this event, dog-less co-workers will be inspired to adopt when they observe the human-animal bond. The Work Day is Take Your Pet to Work Week is the week which leads up to Take Your Dog to Work Day. The two registered trademarks of PSI are Take Your Dog To Work Week and Take Your Pet To Work Day. In 2003, the day was celebrated for the five years of serving to save the lives of homeless pets. Nearly 5,000 companies were joined in that celebration. In 2015, Pet Sitters International celebrated the 17th Take Your Dog to Work Day and changed their 2001 theme to “Because who’s ever heard of working as a cat?” to playfully mention the joys of dogs in the workplace. In 2016, Modern Dog Magazine and PSI encouraged pet lovers to “make it your business to help pets in need” by joining the 18th annual celebration.
