Ganesh Chaturthi, commonly called as Vinayaka Chaturthi is a festival observed by Hindu people all over the world. This day celebrates the God Ganesh and it is a ten-day festival. This celebration begins on the fourth day of Hindu lunisolar calendar month Bhadrapada and continues for ten days. This year the observation starts on September 02. Ganesha is seen as the god of new beginnings as it is believed that Ganesha will remove all the obstacles that are on their way. Ganesh Chaturthi is a grand festival that is celebrated mainly in all the places of India. It is the public event and it is an official in many places in India.

History of Ganesh Chaturthi
Origin and history of this festival remain obscure. The earliest appearance of word Ganesha is found in Rigveda. Later Sanskrit texts like Mahabharata, Grhya Sutras, Vajasaneyi Samhita, and Yajnavalkya Smriti also has the mention of Ganesha in different names. In Puranas, Ganesha is praised as a god of success and obstacle remover. He is also widely seen in numerous archaeological scriptures and cravings even before 8th century CE. This festival was first publicly celebrated during the era of Shivaji in Pune. During the British Raj, this day was celebrated privately by families. The celebration became public again by the Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak. From then, till now Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great with enthusiasm and joy by Hindu people.

How to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is observed for ten days. On the first day, a clay idol of Ganesha will be installed in homes, temples and in public areas with the stage. For the next nine days, mantras are chanted, the lord will be worshipped and fasting will also be taken place. Every day after the Puja, free food will be offered to people. On the tenth day, the idol will be taken with heavy music and dance to river, pond or sea where the idol will be immersed and that Ganesha is believed to reach Mount Kailash to Parvati and Shiva. Sometimes athletic and martial arts competitions will also be held in public areas. During the festival, most of the streets in the town of India will Ganesha with decorated lighting, flowers, etc. People will visit temples on all ten days as it is believed to auspicious to visit Ganesha during that time. Ganesha’s favourite food, modak (a dumpling made from rice flour and stuffed with jaggery, coconut, etc are steamed) will be prepared and served to him. Celebration varies widely from place to place.
