World No Tobacco Day comes on May 31 of every year. It is celebrated around the world and intended to promote a 24-hour period of abstention from all forms of tobacco burning around the globe. The day is additionally designed to convey an awareness of the general pervasiveness of smoking and to deny health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers revealed to second-hand smoke. In 1987, the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day by members of the state. The Day has both excitement and endurance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry in the past twenty-nine years.
“The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going.” – Napoleon Hill
History of World No Tobacco Day
In 1987, the WHO’s World Health Assembly announced a Resolution calling for April 7, 1988, to be “a world no-smoking day.” The goal of the day was to promote tobacco users worldwide to abstain from using tobacco products for 24 hours, an action they hoped would provide assistance for those trying to quit smoking. In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was established by the World Health Assembly, calling for the presentation of World No Tobacco Day, every year on May 31. Since then, the WHO has maintained World No Tobacco Day (WNT) every year, linking each year to a different tobacco-related theme.
“Smoking cigarettes is like paying to have your life cut shorter – the most foolish thing anyone can ever do.”
In 1998, the WHO established the Tobacco Free Leadership, an attempt to focus on international support and gestures on the global health issue of tobacco. The enterprise provides assistance for creating global public health policy, stimulates mobilization between organizations, and continues the World Health Organization Framework Convocation on Tobacco Control. The WHO FCTC is a global public health treaty approved in 2003 by countries around the globe as a document to execute strategies that work towards tobacco suspension. The World No Tobacco Day is one of the eight official world health campaigns marked by WHO, along with World Immunization Week, World Health Day (April 07), World Tuberculosis Day (March 24), World Malaria Day (April 25), World Blood Donor Day (June 14), World AIDS Day (December 01), and World Hepatitis Day (July 28).
