National Licorice Day is observed throughout the United States on April 12 of every year. National Licorice Day was created to celebrate the history and health benefits of black licorice. Black licorice comes in twists, candies, ropes, jelly beans, jewels, and much more. Licorice is the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a sweet flavor extracted from it is used to flavor candies or sweeteners. These extracts are also used in herbalism and traditional medicine. Licorice is said to have few side effects like increased blood pressure, low potassium level, brain damage, and muscle weakness if consumed excessively. In most parts of America, there are two varieties of licorice, i.e., black licorice, red licorice, flavored with strawberry, cherry, or raspberry. Licorice is also used in tea, desserts, alcohol, and even cosmetics. This day is celebrated with many types and flavors of licorice.
