World Rat Day comes on April 4 of every year. Rats are medium-sized, long-tailed rodents that belong to the superfamily Muroidea. Typically, rats are distinguished from mice only by their size. The muroid family is complicated and very broad. Scientifically, the terms rat and mouse are not confined to the members of the Rattus and Mus genera. The day is created to acknowledge the Rat as a wonderful pet and companion animal for people of all ages.
“Our everyday cares, making a living, the crazy rat race of life, often make us forget the value of a good deed. Thus the goodness that exists within each and every one of us is covered with layer upon layer of indifference and unawareness. In fact, we almost have to be reminded of the fact that goodness is there inside us.” – Shari Arison.
History of World Rat Day
On April 4, 1995, the first digest of the world’s most significant running discussion for the rats, ratlist, was sent out. Then, in 2002, the movement was started among Rat lovers to celebrate World Rat Day, and April 4 was chosen as the day that was unusual for the inception of Ratlist. From 1995, Ratlist boasted nearly 2300 members and served as a meeting location and clean house for pet care information. James Kittock and Robyn Arthur, the current custodians, took over the group on April 4th, making it the perfect day for World Rat Day.
