National Flossing Day is celebrated the day after Thanksgiving, which this year falls on November 29. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of taking care of our teeth and aims to raise awareness about oral health. According to the American Dental Association, flossing should be done at least once a day, either before or after brushing, for the best results in maintaining oral health. The American Dental Association emphasizes that both brushing and flossing are equally essential for good dental hygiene.

History of National Flossing Day
National Flossing Day was created in 2000 by the National Flossing Council to remind people of the importance of taking care of their teeth. Dental floss has been available since the late 1890s, and flossing is essential for preventing cavities and gum disease. In 1898, Johnson & Johnson developed the first patented dental floss, at a time when toothbrushes were quite expensive. Initially, dental floss was made from thin silk threads, but by the end of World War II, nylon became a common material.
Surprisingly, it took about 102 years after the invention of dental floss to establish National Flossing Day. Flossing should be done every day to remove plaque from the areas between your teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach. If plaque is not removed, it can turn into tartar (or calculus), which is why daily flossing is so important.
