History of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed annually on November 29, following resolutions 32/40 B of December 2, 1977, and 34/65 D of December 12, 1979, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. These resolutions, along with recommendations under the agenda item “Question of Palestine,” established the observance.
Special events and commemorative activities are organized by the Division for Palestinian Rights of the UN Secretariat in consultation with the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
In 2012, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 67/19, granting Palestine non-member observer State status at the UN. The resolution was passed with 138 votes in favor, nine against, and 41 abstentions in the 193-member Assembly.
The resolution on the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People also encourages Member States to provide extensive support and publicity for this annual event.
