History of Cab Franc Day
The first celebration of Cab Franc Day, also known as Cabernet Franc Day, was observed in 2015. Cab Franc is an important black grape variety grown worldwide. It is one of the three most important grape varieties used in wine production. Typically, it is grown to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Bordeaux style, though it can also be vinified on its own, as seen in the Loire’s Chinon wines. In addition to being used in blends, it is also made into ice wine.
Cabernet Franc is generally lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon, producing a bright pale red wine that adds finesse and a spicy aroma, which blends well with more robust grape varieties. Cabernet Franc is believed to have originated in the Libournais region of southwest France in the 17th century. Records of Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux date back to the late 18th century, though it was planted in the Loire region earlier in that period.
